FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who is eligible to go on an IOL Training Trip?
You must be at least 18 years old. You should be comfortable and confident being in front of a group and teaching material that will be provided for you. The safari will not require any physical exertion beyond getting in and out of a van.
How can I become a volunteer for IOL?
Fill out the Volunteer form under REGISTER.
How will I know what to teach?
We will train you. You will receive an IOL Facilitator’s Guide and personalized training. As a team, we will decide which topics each team member will teach.
How many volunteers do you take on a trip?
Six plus a trip leader
Is it safe?
IOL has developed relationships over the past ten years. We only use our most trusted resources for guides and transportation. We are continually monitoring information given by the U.S. Department of State to ensure that we are up to date on the countries level of security.
How soon do I need to book my trip?
As soon as possible. Since there are only six spots/trip, we fill up quickly.
Will I need immunizations?
Some immunizations are required, most others are highly recommended. Your local health department will give you all the information you will need, as well as the shots themselves. It is best, however, to inquire about your immunizations as soon as possible, as some may require a second dose a few weeks after the first one.
When is the money due?
As soon as you sign up, a deposit of $500 is due to hold your spot. The remaining balance is due one month prior to the departure.
Will I need an electrical adaptor?
Yes. Kenyan electricity is 220/240 vs. US 110/120 AC, therefore, you will need adaptors for electrical items. Kenya uses the same three-pronged plug as the UK. The key is to have a multi-adaptor
Is there more than one type of volunteer trip?
Yes. There are two types of trips to consider: 1) Be a facilitator for a 4-day training session for 40-60 teachers, or 2) Be a follow-up facilitator to work with teachers during their school day. (You get to work with the kids on this one!)

When are the trips scheduled in 2020?
The trip schedules vary slightly, however, currently, we are planning on trips to Kenya April 7-17, April 6-16, and April 26th- May 1st.
Do I have to have a background in education?
No. While a background in education can be a plus, it is not required. The only requirement is being willing to stand in front of a very friendly group of 50-60 teachers and share material, in which you have been well trained.
What is the cost of the trip? What is or is not included?
The cost is $3,000 plus airfare.
WHAT IS INCLUDED: hotel, breakfast and lunch, in-country transportation, in-country guides, tips, and shopping excursions; and safari (glamping (glamour camping), all meals, guide, transportation, and a visit to a Maasai Village).
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED: airfare, travel insurance, passport/visa fees, dinner
How long does a trip last?
Approximately 10 days
Do I need a visa?
Yes. You can obtain your visa either on-line or at the airport once you arrive in-country. The cost is $50.
Do I have to arrange my own travel?
Yes and No. Your airfare is not included in the cost of the trip, however, you will contact our travel agent and work directly with her to book your flight. You will pay her directly. She coordinates all flights so we arrive and depart at the same time. (She is a master at getting us where we need to be, when we need to be there, and doing it for the most reasonable price available!)
How much luggage am I allowed to take?
Each passenger is allowed 2-50 lb. bags to check and 26 lb. bag to carry on the flight. Local in-country flights only allow 1 – 50 lb. bag and a carry on. If possible, pack your clothes in your carry on so your checked luggage can be used to take items for donations to other groups and/or training materials for the teachers.
How much money should I bring?
All expenses will be covered except for dinners. Touring and shopping trips will occur one day in the area where you are staying and teaching. There will also be opportunities for shopping at the village while on the safari. You may want to bring $100-200 USD just to be safe. ATMs are always available and most places will take credit cards.
